Royal Thurso Hotel

It's a shame to see this clearly once grand hotel looking a little tired. Clearly air travel is too cheap now and potential customers are on holiday on the Costa del Sol etc. The lady on reception (Friday 22/08 evening) was super helpful beyond the call of duty. Her son came in for a drink later.

The hotel recently had a change in management, so older reviews are not applicable because our stay here was fantastic. Although the furniture was a bit old, the room was great value for money, very clean. The staff were nice and attentive and it included an amazing breakfast with gluten free and vegan options. Overall, the hotel exceeded our expectations and we cannot recommend it enough.

An amazingly old, and charismatic place. Look at this picture and tell me if there's a single straight line in the room? And where it is. The hallways are equally offset, the hallways are a maze that will entertain your small children for hours while you search for them. There are zero accommodations if you're old and frail; you will fall in the bathtub. But there's also a chance the shower won't work, so that won't be a concern to begin with. Some of the lights work, I think. Our particular room had a lovely view of the co-op that offers better food than the included breakfast (the coffee was strong and satisfying) The hotel had good, clean (but not even) rooms with very friendly staff at a reasonable price. That was what we were looking for when we stayed, and everything else was a true curiosity of wonder from a time long gone in sterile hotels lacking personality today. Would recommend genuinely. Worth the experience

Stayed here for one night as a last minute choice after missing the last ferry up to Orkney. The support I got from the staff was definitely the highlight of the stay here. The hotel is clearly dated and hasn’t been properly updated other than some paint here and there. The room was clean, bed was fine, place was quiet, so all I needed for a night. Staff was superb - friendly and welcoming upon arrival and gave me lots of dinner recommendations despite my late arrival. Had trouble finding a taxi in the morning to get me to the ferry and staff helped me call every taxi in the area to make sure I made the ferry. He saved the morning! Not a luxury stay by any means, but safe, quiet, & clean night’s stay with helpful staff!

Amazing value, and great location. Breakfast made up for quality with quantity! Stayed in a 3 man room - warm, comfortable, decent facilities if not the most modern. Didn’t eat dinner at the hotel - go for a curry at T’s Cafe, and you won’t be disappointed.

Rooms were great only fault I found was I slipped in the bath it is a bit old amenities they should look into this as if I was a really old person could have been injured easily, but apart from that everything was great especially for the price you pay, parking at the back location was great for getting near by everything we needed, The woman at the front desk though was quite abrupt and rude but would stay again for the quality of room you get and the central area

Stayed for one night with two children after we had a camping disaster and the receptionist was super friendly, helpful, and very accommodating. I think if they hadn't been I probably would have given this a much lower rating. We ate at the bar area and the food was nice in the evening with a much needed pint, breakfast was a buffet style and was okay. I agree the rooms where very dated but our room was immaculately clean. I personally found the corridors charming and almost TARDIS like! But I kinda like this about it. The room was cold due to single glazing window in our room and it was heated with a storage heater that we put on for a short while. It quickly heated the room. Still was very grateful for the room after our disaster of camping and unpredictable weather. It seemed ideally located in Thurso. Thank you.

Quirky hotel in the centre of Thurso. Read the other reviews & be miserable. It is an old fashioned hotel. Faded glory. It's very reasonably priced. Room was clean & bed comfortable. It is minutes from the beach. It has Tartan carpets! Staff are very pleasant & helpful.
